The Impact of Cobalt Mining on Human Rights in the DRC

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is a key player in the global cobalt supply chain, essential for renewable energy technologies and electronic devices. However, the mining sector has been fraught with human rights violations, including child labor, unsafe working conditions, and environmental degradation. This Human Rights Council session will explore the intricate relationship between cobalt mining and human rights abuses in the DRC, focusing on the effects on local communities and workers. Delegates will discuss the roles of multinational corporations, government regulations, and international demand in perpetuating these issues. The aim is to develop actionable strategies to promote ethical mining practices, enhance corporate accountability, and support the rights of affected populations, fostering a sustainable and equitable approach to resource extraction in the DRC.
